Death Guard Kill Team

You may not know this, but I have painted most of the Age of Sigmar range. At last count, I only have four factions left to collect! To me, that’s a testament to the design ethos which has gone from strength to strength. But you can have too much of a good thing.

With the release of Kill Team: Into the Dark I decided to rest my ‘main’ game and muck about with some 40k adjacent settings.  My opinion of 40k is unchanged (bloated, dated, stale) but the minis still have a charm to them. Without a doubt, if you want to get good at painting, space marines are what you need to practice on!

So I dug out some Dark Imperium Death Guard minis and slapped some paint about.  I don’t recommend following the ‘Eavy Metal paint guides.  My green armour uses Rakarth Flesh as a basecoat, contrast wash of Militarum Green, and highlighted with Ionrach Skin.  The rust and verdigris is the scheme from Darren Latham.

The two special effects, glow and goo, are something I came up with myself.  The glow is base coated white, then layered with Rose Pink Floro from GSW.  I then drop a recess wash of White Floro into the ribbing.  It is prominent on the tabletop, but pops when photographed!  The goo is made by mixing artists heavy gel medium with Tesseract Glow, then splodged onto any holes, orifices, sores and snapped cables that presented themselves.  A few micro beads for bubbles and droplets sealed the effect.

Nurgle minis are such a break from the norm, its not hard to tell why they are many painters favourites!  I have no doubt I’ll be investing in the Gellar Pox Infected team soon.

For those interested in my commission painting, each marine took apx 2 hours each, at about £30 per mini.
