Since the launch of Ossiarch Bone Reapers (OBR) I've wanted to create a crematorian army. They're the most aware of the tragedy that has befallen them, cursed to only destroy in Nagahs's long plan to dominate all things. Their leader is constantly striving to find a solution to this, by raiding other civilisations repositories of knowledge. The greater tragedy is that as quickly as they can muster the tomes and books, they are destroyed, as the crematorians are constantly being devoured by an inner flame that spreads to anything they touch.
Somewhere Nagash is being smug about this, no doubt fully intending to create a legion of warriors obsessed with seeking knowledge that is dangerous to himself, and also destroying it.
However, two problems present themselves after this. One I dont really care about (politely speaking, they are sub-optimal in game) and the other is, an entire army of burning skeletons that requires Object Source Lighting (OSL).
GW proved to be super useful in providing one painted example of this colour scheme, completed by the 'eavy metal team. There is a very basic painting guide in the OBR Battletome, but it wasnt going to come close to the above.
I used an airbrush to see if I could replicate the effect, even going as far to try a smouldering bone effect on the far right. None worked well enough, but could be interpreted as more 'realistic'
Instead, I looked at a more stylised approach. No OSL at all, just an inner glow to the miniatures and hard black, bone and bronze. Alas, my normal neatness has suffered in this process, but I think the effect is striking enough to justify it.
With a little adjustment and thought, this could work well for Legion of the Damned marines, Avatars of Khaine et al.
Once I got the hang of it, the process was quite simple. If I were to complete this example unit of 10 warriors for you, that would cost apx £30.
